چکیده

We analyze the idea that nuclear activity, either AGN or star formation, can be triggered by interactions, studying the percentage of active, HII and quiescent galaxies with companions. Our sample was selected from the Palomar survey, and avoids selection biases faced by previous studies. This sample was split into 5 different groups, Seyfert galaxies, LINERs, transition galaxies, HII galaxies and absorption line galaxies. The comparison between the local galaxy density distributions of the different groups showed that in most cases there is no statistically significant difference among galaxies of different activity types, with the exception that absorption line galaxies are seen in higher density environments, since most of them are in the Virgo cluster. The comparison of the percentage of galaxies with nearby companions showed that there is a higher percentage of LINERs, transition, and absorption line galaxies with companions than Seyferts and HII galaxies. However, we find that when we consider only galaxies of similar morphological types (ellipticals or spirals), there is no difference in the percentage of galaxies with companions among different activity types, indicating that the former result was due to the morphology-density effect. Also, only small differences are found when we consider galaxies with similar Hα luminosities. The comparison between HII galaxies of different Hα luminosities shows that there is a significantly higher percentage of galaxies with companions among HII galaxies with L(Hα)> 10 erg s−1, than among those with L(Hα)≤ 10 erg s−1, indicating that interactions increase the amount of circumnuclear star formation, in agreement with previous results. The fact that we find that galaxies of different activity types have the same percentage of companions, suggests that interactions between galaxies is not a necessary condition to trigger the nuclear activity in AGNs. We compare our results with previous ones and discuss their implications. National Radio Astronomy Observatory, P.O. The Frequency of Active and Quiescent Galaxies with Companions

We study the percentage of active, HII and quiescent galaxies with companions in the Palomar survey. We find that when we separate the galaxies by their morphological types (ellipticals or spirals), to avoid morphology-density effects, there is no difference in the percentage of galaxies with companions among the different activity types.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Hip Surgery in Quiescent or Active Tubercular Hip Arthritis; Is Reactivation Risk Really a Matter

About 15 % of all musculoskeletal tuberculosis (TB) have hip involvement. Early anti-tubercular drug therapy and other conservative treatment including short-term traction and mobilization programs could prevent hip joint destruction. Reactivation of TB accounts for a significant of active TB incidence, especially in the developed countries with a low TB prevalence. The risk of TB activation ...

The role of interactions

Interactions between galaxies are suggested to be a mechanism responsible for feeding Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Theoretical models show that interactions are an efficient way to drive gas from the galaxy to the nucleus, however, the observational evidence on this subject is controversial. Here we review results in this field, discuss possible limitations of previous studies and the importan...

DASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane

Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...
